CHAPTER 14

WHEN I WENT DOWN to see my tramps and inform them they could come back up on deck, their expressions looked as though they’d seen Kaya.

“What’s up with you lot? Tired of sitting down here? Don’t just stand there, let’s go upstairs.”

“Um, Captain, can we stay down here?” Even the pallid Gram was sitting passively in a corner.

I pretended to fall into contemplation.

“Well, you can if you like,” I said good-naturedly, “but then you’ll be of no use to me and I will have every reason to eat your souls.”

They turned even paler and their pupils dilated further still.

“All hands on deck, you rotten herrings!” barked Gram, snapping out of his stupor. “Or do you want the captain to do all the work for you?”

Three seconds later there was no one left in the hold. The thing about eating their souls was just the kick in the pants they needed. They could not have failed to hear perfectly well what was occurring up on deck, and they’d invented a bunch of fairytales.

But that was their problem.

Back on deck myself, I watched my crew strip all the corpses of loot, whooping their excitement and surprise. Good job they weren’t emptying their stomachs; it meant the sight of blood and severed limbs was nothing new for them.

While they were busy, I summoned Gram to discuss what to do next.

He proposed we return to port and sell the loot, and sink the Redskins’ ship. The ship needed sinking in any case, because it had a magic mark on it. And if they’d managed to raise the alarm and then went dark for more than five hours, other ships would hurry to assist them.

It was forbidden to settle one’s differences in dock. You could of course challenge someone to a duel, but only the captain, i.e. me. I liked the idea of sailing to port, but it was a long way and I didn’t have all that much time left.

There was, however, another possibility. We could transfer to the trophy ship, and then we would make it in a day, perhaps even less. But what would I do in the port? What if I ran into difficulties and had to flee, like a rat, and spend the rest of the test on the run. I decided to wait for assistance, which I was led to believe would be arriving soon. I was in no hurry to get anywhere.

“I’ll be in my cabin. Do not disturb me!” I said to Gram. “Get everything ship shape up here. And deal with the slaves.”

I had no idea what to do with the slaves, but it wasn’t my business. I popped in to inspect them, and none of them aroused pity or the desire to help. It might have been harsh, but that was just the kind of guy I was.

I made the best possible use of my time in the cabin by doing sweet nothing except for eating. I remembered Glutton, whom I’d forgotten to bring with me, and realized how much more economical it was to travel without him.
